It’s pretty common for homeowners to have an unfinished basement. You always think that you’ll get to fixing it up someday but instead just use it as a storage space. Yet, there are so many things that can be done with that space. For example, consider these four creative ideas.
Install a Home Theater
If your family loves movies, then this is the perfect idea for you! Install a large screen on the wall—either a giant TV or a projector screen. Then, add surround sound equipment, dim lighting, and, perhaps, a snack bar. Of course, you’ll want to consider seating as well. You could put in regular movie theater-style seats or just a few reclining chairs and beanbags. You could also consider doing a bigger remodeling project with this idea by picking a theme—such as Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, or another family favorite—and making the whole theater be a replica of something from a movie.
Put in an Adventurous Playroom
If you have more than one or two kids, then a playroom is definitely something to consider. After all, you want to be able to have a place that is designated just for toys so that they don’t clutter up the rest of your house. In this playroom, you might want to consider having some gymnastic mats, toy chests, and a sound system for music. You could even have some play features built into the house—such as slides, indoor treehouses, and reading lofts. Make sure that you have plenty of shelving and cubby spaces for your children to keep their toys and books organized.
Set up a Man Cave
Despite the name, a “Man Cave” is not just for men. It is just a recreational area where people can escape to if they want to get away from everyone else or just chill with their friends. The ideal man cave typically includes a large TV, a comfortable couch, a pool or poker table, and a bar for snacks and drinks. You should also use neutral and darker-toned colors when considering the interior design as man caves aren’t usually brightly-colored places.
Create a Lavish Guest Suite
Whether your in-laws frequent your home or you tend to have friends from out of state visiting, a guest suite is always useful. If your unfinished basement doesn’t have any walls up for rooms, then you’ll want to put a few up. A proper guest suite usually just has a room and a bathroom. However, you can take it a step further by creating a small private living area and/or kitchen for your guests. Such features will definitely help your visitors feel more at home.
Really, you can do so many things with an unfinished basement. If you have children who are into extra-curricular activities—like dancing or art—you could set up the space as a studio for them to practice their hobbies in. Whatever you do, just make sure that you’re transforming your basement into a space that you will love and use a lot.
