Home Improvement Projects You Don’t Need Pros For

I love a good DIY project for so many different reasons. Aside from saving plenty of money, there’s also a sense of pride that courses through me when I beautify and fix my home with my own two hands. That’s definitely something y’all should get behind. Check out these home improvement projects you don’t need pros for.
Fixing Floor Squeaks
Tired of walking across your floor and having it talk back to you? Every creak and squeak might as well be a cry for help. Floor creaks don’t necessarily mean you need new floors. Most of the time, it just means you need to reinforce the floorboards.
Driving screws into the floor joints is the most effective way to eliminate the squeaks. Walk around the room with a pencil and mark all the areas that squeak. Then, drive the screws 6 inches apart and add more screws if you need to. Use 2-inch screws, or go up to 2 ½ inches if the subfloors are thick.
Repairing a Cracked Driveway
A cracked driveway might seem like a job for professionals, but it’s not. If you’re not afraid to use a little elbow grease and get down to business, you can handle this job on your own.
Luckily, y’all can start by removing the asphalt driveway on your own before you replace the cracked and broken-up pieces. It’s not common for homeowners to own a jackhammer, electrical chipper, and circular saw. So there’s some equipment you’ll either need to purchase or rent. Check in with your local hardware store before starting this project.
Radon Testing
It’s the silent killer. Radon is a tasteless, odorless, and colorless gas. You’ll never know it’s in your home until it’s too late. Don’t wait. It moves through spaces in the soil and can enter the home through any opening, such as a crack in the foundation.
Now, the removal part is something you might need the pros to do, but the testing is all you. Purchase a radon testing kit from home centers or hardware stores for about 10 dollars. Know that you’ll need to let the kit sit in your home for a week and then send it to a lab for the results.
Resurfacing Your Kitchen Countertops
We love kitchen makeovers—especially when you renovate your kitchen yourself. Most kitchen countertops need a little face-lift. We like to think of it as making them look fresh again. If your laminate countertops are a little worn but still sound, resurface them.
You’ll need to de-gloss the laminate with a sander. Next, apply the base coat, and then you have 20 minutes to add the decorative chips. Have those in the dispenser well before you even lay the base coat down.
