How to Increase Productivity in the Manufacturing Industry

The manufacturing industry always looks for new ways to increase their productivity. While it’s easy for companies with previous success to say, “this is how we’ve always done it and it’s been working for decades,” there’s always something new sneaking up to help improve things. This article introduces how to increase productivity in the manufacturing industry.
Start with the people
One of the most common mistakes manufacturers make is having the wrong people in the wrong job. Managers have to hire the right people for the job they’ll excel in. If this is neglected, it could result in sodden efficiency. Work with people’s strengths, and understand what makes them thrive. If you can successfully implement this, it will reduce injuries, job frustration, and turnover.
Conduct a workflow analysis
Many factors go into a workflow. One of those factors, besides the people, is the process itself. A couple important factors are inventory and organization. Countless studies show that thousands of dollars are wasted due to a lack in organization of the raw materials onsite. If workers can’t find the materials they need, their productivity will naturally decrease.
If the previous points mentioned haven’t applied to you, good work, you’re on top of it so far. However, there’s two more crucial parts in identifying how to increase productivity in the manufacturing industry.
Integrate new technology
Technology constantly changes, especially in manufacturing. One of the most innovative advancements has been computer numerically controlled (CNC) machinery. CNC technology is most commonly integrated into manufacturing through routers and 3D printing. While these tools will cost you more upfront, they easily pay for themselves because they’re highly adaptive to new production demands. For example, if a sudden quantity increase needs to happen, the computer can easily adjust to the change. In addition, CNC machines can also quickly adapt to make specific changes, such as cutting at a different angle or printing in a different dimension. All this happens through a few easy steps on the computer.
Never stop learning
Lastly, with technology and demand changes, proper training becomes crucial. This is a worthwhile investment for employees. It may seem too good to be true, but if employees consistently learn how to improve on their daily tasks, their output, and the quality of that output, will increase. For example, if your employees would like to learn more about CNC, consider having machine operators take training courses. You’ll quickly find that education is another investment that repays itself in the long run.
A lot of changes in the manufacturing industry occurred in recent decades. Some have been for the best, some for the worst, but nonetheless, it’s critical to adapt quickly no matter what happens in the industry. With technological changes like CNC machines, it’s easy for manufacturers to fall behind and lose business if they don’t adopt this technology or hire the right people for the right positions. As the manufacturing industry continues to change each year, achieving success all comes down to training, planning, and adapting appropriately.
