Good drilling tips for electrical and plumbing rough-ins go beyond getting through the lumber. Hole placement, bit selection, and trade coordination all affect the finished route. Careful work also helps protect the framing that supports the house.

1. Map the Route Before Picking Up the Drill

Drilling one hole at a time without considering the full run can create problems several framing bays later. Before making the first opening, look at where the route needs to end.

Review the plans and locate the fixtures or electrical boxes connected to the run. Note any framing that may interrupt the most direct path.
