Construction accidents don’t care about seniority. No matter how many years you’ve spent in the industry, there’s no excuse for ignoring the basic rules of safety. Even the most experienced tradesmen can be seriously injured or worse unless they pay close attention to the work at hand. Taking shortcuts or cutting corners is tempting fate — and that’s a gamble no one on a job site should take. Young or old, it’s crucial for your safety, and that of your coworkers, to consistently follow the proper protocols.

Of course, one of the most important rules is to wear the right gear at all times. This includes a hard hat, steel-toed boots, goggles and gloves. It’s also essential that you make sure all your tools and equipment are in good condition before using them. If a tool, scaffolding or heavy machinery appears to be damaged or broken, it shouldn’t be used. You also should remember to protect yourself by taking periodic breaks. Doing so will help you avoid repetitive-stress injuries.

Whether you’re a rookie or the veteran of dozens of construction sites, you need to pay constant attention to appropriate safety procedures and practices. For more helpful reminders on how to work safely, see the accompanying infographic.
