Every homeowner understands the importance of maintaining an effective HVAC system, given how essential this system is to a home. But sometimes it is easy to take for granted our home’s warmth in the winter and cool air during the summer. That is why you should not wait for your heating and cooling system to develop problems, which can cause significant inconvenience or even pose a safety hazard, not to mention be expensive to repair.

Here are four ways to keep your HVAC system running efficiently year-round.

Change Filters Routinely

Most furnace filters for an average-size home should be replaced every six to twelve months. Check it every season to see how dirty it is, and whether the filter is ready to be replaced.

The longer the filter is used, the more it will build up a collection of dust, allergens, and pollutants that will be recirculated throughout your home (which can cause health problems for those living in the home) or hinder the filter’s efficiency.

Schedule Annual Checkups and Maintenance

An HVAC system should be checked about once a year to ensure it is operating correctly. An HVAC professional will inspect the furnace and air conditioner when you schedule an appointment. The technician will inform you of worn parts of questionable performance, and advise you of any recommended maintenance that may be needed. Taking a proactive approach to your HVAC system can help to keep operational costs low. Waiting to call an HVAC repair person when the system develops a problem could be more expensive and time-consuming.

Report Anything Unusual

If you notice any strange odors or sounds coming from your HVAC equipment, it is a good idea to contact an expert to check out the problem. Although you may be tempted to wait and see if the problem clears up on its own or gets worse, that could cost more money in the long run, in case a major problem is developing. Catching an issue while it is still minor helps to keep your system working properly.

Repair or Replace Parts

A quality furnace can last years, but eventually some parts will begin to wear out. When the heat in your home is not as strong or consistent as usual, or if you are experiencing water leaks, have it checked out by an HVAC expert. Sometimes, a minor repair can head off a major problem. If the part is weakening but might be able to last a little longer, remember that it could break day or night, leaving your home without heat.

Your HVAC system is crucial to keeping your home comfortable. When it breaks down, so does your normal way of life. To avoid this, keep your system working effectively by routinely changing filters, scheduling regular inspections, reporting anything unusual, and considering furnace repair when recommended.
