Moving into a new house often includes making tough choices about what comes with you and what doesn’t make the cut. This can make settling into your new home a bit difficult. You may love the space, but it just doesn’t feel like home yet. No need to worry, here are some suggestions to help you along the way.
1. Get inspired with DIY.
Do it yourself projects have become all the rage in recent years. They are a great way to get creative with home decor and inject your unique style into your house. Plus, you get the added benefit of creating new memories in an all new space. As you create these new memories by doing various projects around your home, the more it feels like it becomes a part of you and the more it becomes a part of you, the more it starts to feel like a home.
2. Have a little fun and write on the walls.
Chalkboard paint goes a long way in a new house. If you have young ones around, paint an entire wall where they can get newly inspired daily. Or, use it in a central location like the kitchen to post daily menus, to-do lists or even a quote of the day. You can even do various art work and drawings. And if you get bored with what is on your wall, you can always erase what is already there and make new art work.
3. Host a housewarming.
You don’t have to go over-the-top with party planning, especially if you’ve recently moved. But, your house will definitely start feeling more like a home when you fill it with friends, family and newly made memories. Laughter and fun will help to bring the warmth to your house that helps transform it to a home.
4. Create a cozy environment with your furniture.
One of the most vital aspects of any home is the furniture. You need to include elements that are functional, yet don’t feel sterile. Try incorporating some wood furniture like Jamco Wood Products into your home. Wood never goes out of style and it brings a natural flow that will make your space feel homier.
5. Use your family initials in a creative way.
Integrate your initials into design elements, including a front-door decoration. You can also use family member initials in fun ways in their bedrooms to make them feel more like their own.
6. Distribute scent throughout the house.
Every home has its own unique scent. Your new house will feel more like your home when it has traces of familiar scents lingering through the rooms. Our memories are tied deeply to scent, so this will help create a personal tie to your new home.
7. Create some familiarity.
When you move into a new home, try creating some familiarity in at least one room. You don’t want to feel like a stranger in your own kitchen. Put things away in a similar fashion as your old space until you feel truly settled in. This will help to make the transition from house to home a little easier.
