Granite can withstand heat, water, oil, scratch, or thrust very efficiently and that is the reason for its ample use as kitchen top. It is durable and strong enough to take the blow but still you will have to take little care to maintain its smooth and shiny finish.

Many people having granite installed kitchen top fitted in their homes have observed that it gets dull and loses its sheen with time. This can be avoided if you keep the below given 7 things in mind.

  1. Granite can withstand very high temperatures and have been tested for the same but still it can get damaged if extremely hot pot is placed on some weak point on the surface; So, no need to test the strength of the granite kitchen top again and again as you would not enjoy the cost and work associated with its replacement. Place hot pad below the saucepan to avoid direct heat contact with granite.
  2. >Kitchen tops serve as convenient chopping boards but using a separate chopping board would increase the lifespan of the kitchen top. Vegetables and fruit juices released on chopping would result into the chemical reaction that would form permanent stains on the surface. Knife may also form scratches on the surface.
  3. Even the strongest surface has its limitations and that stands true for granite worktop as well. Heavy objects and sudden blow would crack the surface. In case you are grinding something with mortar and pestle, place a napkin or cloth below to decrease the thrust.
  4. Granite would not look porous but it absorbs certain liquids if not wiped immediately. Alcoholic drinks are more likely to be absorbed by this tough stone if you don’t wipe it off immediately after spillage. Using coasters beneath the glass would offer good protection.
  5. Cleaning this worktop would be easy and you can use mild soap solution to remove dry dust or stains. Avoid any sort of acidic cleaner as that would burn the surface to make it rough and dull. This would usually be irreversible damage, so don’t take chance with these cleaners.
  6. If any cracks are formed on your worktop then you should immediately get it repaired from the professional before it collapses completely. Applying sealant every six months would keep the surface protected and sealed all the time.
  7. No need to get over abrasive with the worktop to keep it clean and shining as this will do no good to it. Clean it with sponge as it will stay gentle while cleaning the every bit. The flexible sponge will reach out to every nook and corner comfortably.

You would have never thought of paying an extra attention to the kitchen worktop as it is made from hard stones, but little ignorance would make it leak and the water would seep through cracks to reach out to the cabinets below. Keep a close check on the surface, corners, and periphery of the worktop to avoid further damage as replacing it completely would be a major pain.
