Renovating your home can be a great way to make it more comfortable and increase its value at the same time. However, it is important that your next home improvement project stay on a tightly controlled timeline. Otherwise, you could incur significant labor and other cost overruns. What are some ways to stick to a home improvement schedule?

Define the Scope of the Project Early

It is important to determine as quickly as possible how detailed your project is going to be. For instance, you should find out before the project begins whether putting in new lights will require the electrical system to be fully upgraded. It is also a good idea to know whether or not you’ll need to get a permit for any upgrades that will be made.

Will You Do the Work Yourself?

As a general rule, a home remodeling project will take less time to complete if you hire a contractor to do the work. Contractors may also have access to skip bins or other objects needed to keep clutter to a minimum. You want to be able to focus on your project without spending most of your time hauling trips to the dump. When you are remodeling you need to make sure that you utilize your time efficiently.

If you decide to do the work yourself, make sure that you have the skills and experience to do it right the first time. Otherwise, you could spend more time fixing mistakes than it would have taken for a professional to complete the project.

How Are You Paying for the Project?

If you are paying a contractor to improve your home, he or she may expect payment when the project is complete. A lack of funds could limit what you are able to complete at any given time. Therefore, be sure that you either have money saved up ahead of time or that financing is available to ensure that a project stays on schedule.

You may want to talk to your loan officer to refinance your home. You may be able to finance your new project while refinancing your home. If you don’t want to refinance you can go to your local credit union to get a loan.

What Is the Weather Like?

Weather conditions could have a significant impact on how quickly a home improvement project can be completed. For instance, it may be harder to work on a roof during the winter months in a colder climate. Furthermore, certain materials may be harder to use when it is cold or wet outside.

One of the nice things about being a homeowner is that you can do almost anything that you want to improve it. However, a project will generally be easier and more affordable to complete when it is done in a reasonable amount of time. Therefore, be sure to have controls in place to ensure that you stick as close to your projected timeline as possible.
