Additions You Should Make to the Outside of Your Home

When building a home, you have to make a lot of choices about what you want. Since doing this can get expensive very quickly, so leaving a few things for later down the road can be tempting. However, it’s sometimes better to make these add-ons during the building process. Here’s our list of some additions you should make to the outside of your home before the construction process is complete.

Expand Your Garage

Even though you haven’t built your garage yet, you should consider expanding it beyond what you have planned. Most people decide to build their garage to be the perfect size for all the cars they own, which is typically two. However, adding space for one more car is never a bad idea.

Having extra space for storage can be invaluable for most homeowners. Trying to fit everything around the cars can be quite a struggle. Plus, if you have kids, they’ll want their own car once they’re old enough. So already having a place for them to park it inside will help keep it in good condition.

Put in a Porch

Porches are one thing many people tend to regret not getting for their homes. They usually end up on the cutting room floor due to the price. However, having a spot to relax outside is always a welcome addition. Plus, it helps improve the curb appeal of your home.

One thing to remember is that you don’t have to go all in on your porch. It just has to be big enough to fit a couple of chairs and a small table. Larger porches can be a bit excessive and will cut much deeper into your overall budget.

Add Some More Greenery

If you decide to put in a porch, you’ll want to ensure you have something to look at while you’re outside. If you’re building a house from scratch, there’s a good chance the property you bought won’t have many trees or bushes around it. Even if it does, you’ll likely have to remove them to build your home.

That’s why it’s always a good idea to add some greenery to your home after you’ve completed it. It’s nice to look at. Once some trees grow in, they’ll also provide some shade from the sun, which can help make your yard and even indoor areas of your home near them more pleasant.

Install a Storm Door

Another addition you should make to your home’s exterior is the installation of a storm door. While this one might seem pretty minor, it’s an often overlooked feature. Storm doors provide many benefits to homes. And as the name implies, the biggest one is protection against extreme weather. Since your front door will be new and likely quite beautiful, you’ll want to make sure you do everything you can to protect it.

However, that brings up the main counterargument to storm doors: they can cover up how good your entry door looks. But that depends on the style of storm door you buy. We recommend putting one in right away. That way, you can pick out a door that still looks good through your storm door. Making door adjustments later is more difficult.
