It’s always a good idea to work with a contractor who you can trust. Unfortunately, finding such a contractor is not always easy. Below are a few steps you can take to find a contractor who will exceed your expectations.

Check Out Industry Contacts

The best way to find a fantastic contractor is to check with your contacts in the industry. If you know anyone who works in any kind of construction position, ask them who they would choose to work with on a job. If you can get a professional’s opinion, you’ll stand a much better chance of finding someone who will get the job done on the first try.

Check Out State Organizations and Boards

It’s always a good idea to check and make sure that a given contractor is actually licensed. Most states will let you look up an individual to figure out if they’ve passed any kind of relevant certification. This is also incredibly useful if you choose to get contractor’s insurance, as you’ll be able to make sure that the person who is working on your project is actually able to be covered by your policy.

Get Online Recommendations

While the internet is fairly hit or miss in terms of accuracy, you can get a good idea of an individual’s overall record when you check out online reviews. One or two bad reviews shouldn’t be enough to scare you off of a contractor, but neither should one or two good reviews convince you of anything. Try to find contractors who have plenty of reviews so that you can see a general record of the work they have done.

Talk to Them

Do some research on the project you need to be done, and then talk to a few contractors. If the information they give you lines up with what you already know, there’s a good chance that they’re at least going, to be honest with you. Though this won’t necessarily tell you a lot about the quality of the contractor’s work, you can usually do much worse than to work with someone who is willing to be honest with you upfront.

Finding a good contractor is really a matter of doing some digging. Talk to people who work in construction, check online, and do your due diligence to make sure that the contractor is licensed and bonded. If you dig around long enough, you’ll find someone with whom you can work.
