home threats

One of the biggest purchases a person will make during their lifetime is buying (or building) a home. Becoming a homeowner is a huge responsibility. In fact, it may be a bigger responsibility than you are even aware of. There are, for one, significant threats that can badly damage your house and put your family and your livelihood at risk. Mitigating these threats means being preemptive in regards to protecting your home. With that in mind, below are four threats to your home and what you can do to avoid them.

One of the biggest threats to homes is the termite. Termites cause a substantial amount of damage to homes each year. Thankfully, there are steps you can take to prevent termite infestations. This includes maintaining proper drainage with gutters and downspouts, filling in cracks in the foundation, clearing blockage from vents, removing plant growth near wood surfaces, and more.

Mold is something else that can absolutely devastate a house. Mold is very bad for people’s health. This is especially the case for people who suffer from asthma. To prevent mold, you need to prevent wetness and moisture from building within your house and its structure. This requires cleaning out your gutters, installing proper ventilation to prevent moisture, controlling the humidity within your home, and looking for and fixing leaks in your plumbing.

Fire Hazards

The possibility of fires is also something you must protect against if you want to save your family and your home. For one, you should have your electrical system inspected every few years to ensure that it’s up to code and not a fire hazard. You should make sure flammable materials like oily rags are not stored in your house. If you enjoy cigarettes or cigars, you should make sure to smoke only outside. Also, be sure to install fire alarms throughout your home, and replace the batteries on a schedule.

Foundation Issues

One of the most important steps home builders take when building a house is laying the foundation. However, the foundation, too, can become damaged or even destroyed over the years if you don’t take the proper actions. Things you should do to prevent damage to your foundation include making sure water always drains away from your house, not planting trees or shrubs right next to your home, making sure the land next to your house is graded, and sprinkling your lawn so the foundation doesn’t dry up.

Being a homeowner is a big responsibility. This responsibility includes different maintenance tasks you should perform on a regular basis. It also includes checking your home for threats on a schedule. This requires some effort. However, it will be worth it to protect your home and your family.
