Homeowners often need to stay on top of things to keep their homes and possessions safe from damage. One of the most common catastrophes that homeowners face is water damage. Whether it’s from a burst pipe or adverse weather conditions, water buildup can result in flooding and other serious problems. The best way to avoid water damage is to have high-quality drains that help guide and redirect water away. Here are a few tips on how to improve your home drainage system that can benefit you and your home in the long run.
Ideal Gutter System
Exterior gutters are one of the first lines of defense when dealing with weather and preventing flooding. You should install gutters around the perimeter of your roof and ensure all the waterspouts direct water away from your home, preferably on a downward incline. Gutter guards are good for your home because they can help keep debris like leaves and other gunk from blocking the water. However, you should still regularly clean your gutters and ensure the water can flow without issue.
Secure, Stable Drainage
If you live in an area where flooding is common, your home may already have a proper drainage system. Many homes with basements feature some sort of drain to help guide water out of the home and into the sewer system. One of the best ways to improve your home drainage system is to protect and focus on these drainage grates.
For starters, you want to ensure you have a large enough drain or several smaller drains to handle the amount of water that may come into your home. We also recommend installing Buna-N rubber gaskets around your drain covers to help seal them and protect your drains from water, dirt, and other irritants. Buna-N is a high-quality rubber that makes an excellent seal!
Removing Clogs and Obstructions
The best drainage system in the world won’t be effective if it suffers from clogs and other obstructions. If you want to keep your home safe from flooding and water damage, we recommend regularly checking and unblocking your pipes. You can check outdoor drains and gutters regularly, but we recommend calling in a professional to examine and clear your pipes at least once a year.
Install a Sump Pump
A sump pump can be a real savior for your home’s drainage system. Sump pumps work by pumping out water that has accumulated in a sump basin, preventing it from causing water damage to your home. To install it, you’ll first need to dig a hole in the lowest part of your basement or crawl space. This hole, or sump pit, should be deep and wide enough to place the pump. After placing the sump pump in the pit, connect it to a power source and install a discharge pipe that leads the water out of your home. It’s important to ensure the location where the water is discharged does not cause problems to your home’s foundation or your neighbor’s property.
