Making your home as efficient as possible could have a huge impact on your monthly utility bills and potentially increase the value of your property by a substantial amount. It is also going to improve your family’s comfort, and those are just a few of the reasons why you might want to take a look at some of these popular renovations and home upgrades.
Replace Old Appliances
If any of the appliances in your home are more than a decade old, then you should consider replacing them. Older appliances tend to be quite inefficient, and you might notice immediate benefits when you replace them. Once they have been replaced, they must also be regularly maintained by a certified contractor so that they continue to operate efficiently.
Update the Windows
While replacing older windows is an excellent upgrade, that type of project can be somewhat expensive. As an alternative, you should consider updating your current windows. Adding exterior awnings, replacing old weatherstripping, and caulking around the windows are just a few of the simple upgrades that could make your home much more comfortable.
Install a Programmable Thermostat
Programmable thermostats have exploded in popularity, and those devices can often be installed in a matter of minutes. A programmable thermostat will adjust the indoor temperature throughout the day so that no energy is wasted. Some of those devices will even connect to your router so that they can be controlled with a phone or tablet.
Add More Insulation
Replacing or adding additional roof insulation is another simple renovation that can be very beneficial. Over time, insulation is going to become matted and torn, and that is going to result in an incredible amount of heat transfer. As a bonus, a reputable contractor should be able to remove your old insulation and install the high-efficiency insulation in a day or two
Insulate Exposed Pipes
Even if you have a relatively new water heater, keeping your home’s water at the correct temperature can require quite a bit of energy. Insulating all of the exposed pipes will allow you to adjust the water heater to a slightly lower temperature. That straightforward project can be completed with nothing more than a few basic tools, and you will most likely notice an immediate change in your utility bills.
These few renovations are an excellent start, but you should also consider hiring a home inspector. An experienced inspector will be able to carry out a comprehensive home energy assessment and tell you exactly where additional improvements can be made.
