Your contractor called to let you know that the work is done. Your new house is complete. You might be thinking that it’s time to move in, but things aren’t the simple. The build may be done, but the post build cleanup has just begun. That cleanup process can take a long time, but there are some ways to speed that process along.
Rent the Right Vacuum
Dust is the inevitable result of any construction project. No matter how conscientious your contractor was, there’s still likely to be a fine layer of dust coating everything. Even HEPA residential vacuums aren’t really designed to capture the fine dust that construction leaves behind. Renting a commercial grade, HEPA vacuum cleaner will substantially reduce your clean up time. One or two passes through the house should do the job, rather multiple passes that still leaves dust hanging around.
Rent a Roll Away Dumpster
Many people don’t realize it, but you can rent a roll away dumpster. They come in a variety of sizes, but even the small ones are often the equivalent of five or six pickup truck loads of trash. This lets you consolidate all of the trash into one place and have it hauled away in one fell swoop. In general, you pay a flat fee for the dumpster that includes disposal of the trash. Most companies like Petersons’s Service Corp do, however, impose restrictions on hazardous materials. Those materials have special disposal requirements and can’t be mixed with non-hazardous trash. So be sure to ask for a list of restricted materials.
Hire Professionals
Building a house is very expensive, so many homeowners are eager to avoid additional costs once the building is up. If speed is more important than cost at this point, you might consider hiring a company that specializes in post build cleanup. These companies will usually bring in a crew to vacuum and mop the entire house, wipe everything down, and clean the windows and fixtures. It’ll be expensive compared to doing it all yourself, but a professional crew can also finish the job in a fraction of the time.
The post build cleanup is never fun, but it can be downright loathsome if it drags on for weeks. You can cut down on the DIY time by renting a high-powered, commercial HEPA vacuum and renting a roll away dumpster. If you simply don’t have the time or energy to devote to the clean-up effort, you can turn to a professional service. Either way, you’ll save yourself a lot of time.
