Although the idea of living out in the country can seem appealing, it does come with its disadvantages. Before packing up all of your family’s belongings and moving out in the middle of nowhere, make sure that you keep these four things in mind. You might decide that living away from the hustle and bustle of the city will make these disadvantages worth it, but you should at least know about these potential issues so that you can make a fully informed decision.
1. Lack of Convenience
Living in the city limits can be a lot more convenient. When you move into the country, you will be farther away from work, your children’s schools, convenience stores, grocery stores and other amenities. This means that you can’t just run out and grab something at the store quickly, and you will spend more of your time driving.
2. Increase in Driving Expenses
When you look at the cost of gas, you know that adding extra driving to your routine can be costly. Therefore, you should weigh out just how much more you will have to spend on fuel and vehicle maintenance costs by moving out into the country. If you have a fuel-efficient vehicle, these added expenses might not be particularly high. Otherwise, you could end up spending a lot more than you think on extra driving costs.
3. Lack of Services
Many rural areas simply don’t have the same services that more urban and suburban ones do. For example, some rural areas don’t have high-speed Internet or phone services. You will also have limited options for cable or satellite television. Your cell phone may not even get good reception at your own home. Moving into areas that are already developed save you the trouble of having to find services that work for you because it’s already been set up and done for you.
4. Additional Costs
Moving out into the country can come along with other additional costs as well. For example, you might have to install and maintain a septic tank, which isn’t something that you generally have to worry about if you have sewage services through the city that you live in. In any rural location, septic tank pumping and cleaning is something that will need to be done every few years. You may also have to pay more for electric or water services since they may need to set up extra pipes or lines to reach your new home. These types of extra costs can really add up in the long run.
Although the idea of moving into the country can seem appealing, you do have to think about all of these potential issues first. Then, you will know what you will be getting yourself into, and you can make the right decision for yourself and your family.
