Men like power tools, especially if they simplify a task they have to do anyway, make a large and powerful noise, or create envy among their friends. Look for a tool that no one else in your social circle has in their garage, or which you know suits their specific pursuits. Here is a list of five must have power tools for every man’s garage this holiday season.

1. Hand Drill/ Electric Screwdriver

A cordless drill, which can also serve as an electric screwdriver, is the perfect gift for every man, even if he already has one. Cordless drills are among the most versatile power tools available, because they serve so many purposes. They can be used with a drill bit to pilot holes, hole saws to create an opening in the piece of wood, or screw driver bits to remove screws from an old project, or tap screws for a new project. Unfortunately, after a few years the batteries typically stop holding a charge, and replacing the batteries is more expensive than simply buying a whole new kit. Because of this design weakness, you can safely buy the man in your life a new drill every two to three years. For bonus points, buy a drill whose batteries will interchange with tools they already own, including other drills, flashlights, small saws and more.

2. Jigsaw

For men interested in crafting with power tools, buying a basic handheld jigsaw is a great place to start. These saws have a very fine blade that will follow a curve, to create unique designs in wood, plastic, metal and more. To make the gift more versatile, make sure to buy several blade types, which will allow the saw to be used in a variety of materials.

3. Rotary Tool

Rotary tools, made popular by Dremel, make an excellent gift because they can be used for so many tasks. Specialized tips are available to cut through metal, wood, plastic, fiberglass, and a number of other surfaces. They can also be used with a polishing bit, to buff and polish jewelry, silverware, collectible metals and more. Sanding bits, in a variety of shapes, allow crafters to do precision sanding, remove rust from metal, or smooth wood. Finally, there are a number of specialized bits for carving and routing wood. For bonus points, look for a rotary tool that comes with a collection of bits for multiple purposes.

4. Oscillating Multi-Tool

Oscillating multi-tools take the work out of jobs that used to take elbow grease. By switching out blades, the tool can be used as a small sander, a mechanized scraper, a trimmer, a cutting tool for PVC, and more. Getting a good oscillating multi-tool, with a variety of bits, makes tasks like scraping paint less tedious, and more macho, simply by adding a motor.

5. Infrared Thermometer

The infrared thermometer is a surprisingly versatile tool, which simplifies a number of manly tasks, and can be used for grilling as well as completing items on your honey-do list. The infrared thermometer, which looks somewhat like a mini radar gun, can be used to check the temperature of a grill or turkey fryer, to find where a draft is entering the home through a window or drawer, and more.

Power tools make a great gift for any man. Look for tools that are versatile, so that they can be used for a wider variety of projects. Also focus on tool sets that come with more pieces, often for less money. Talk to the man in your life today to find out what his specific interests are, and buy power tools that complement those already in his workbench.
