When your home just isn’t meeting your living requirements anymore, you have a tough decision ahead of you. Do you take the time to expand your house with an addition, or should you simply move somewhere new? Both options have their various pros and cons. It’s up to you to decide what issues highest on your list of priorities and what solutions will work best. In this article, we’ll give you a few tips on how to decide whether you should move or remodel. Once you go through these, the choice should be much clearer.

Weigh Out the Costs of Both Options

Obviously, the cost of whatever you do is one of the most substantial factors of deciding to move or remodel. Moving takes quite a bit of time and research. Add to that the cost of selling your house, and you end up with a lot of expenses. Adding a new addition to your existing home might sound nice, but with building, permits, and material costs, it might not be fiscally responsible, depending on your plans. There’s nothing wrong with getting estimates for your remodel; you just need to be realistic with your projections.

Decide How Important Your Community is

How much does your local community mean to you? Do you have friends and family nearby that you would hate to leave behind? Perhaps you enjoy the proximity to schools or other services. There are a lot of deciding factors when it comes to the community you stay in. Moving might seem tempting, but if it means giving up a community you really care about or that helps you out a lot, staying put might be more worth it. If you have children or elderly family members, this also becomes a much bigger factor in whether you should remodel or move.

Find Out the Remodel’s Possible Return

One of the really nice things about remodeling or adding an addition to your house is that it will usually increase the value of your home later on. You can kill two birds with one stone with a remodel. Use it to fix a problem that’s bothering you about your house while also making changes to increase its sale price in the future. However, it’s important to remember that not all remodels will return back what you paid for them, so tread cautiously when planning one out.

Understand What a Remodel Can Actually Fix

Unfortunately, a remodel just can’t fix some problems with your living situation. For example, if you don’t enjoy your neighbors, no amount of construction is going to make them more tolerable. In that case, a move may be the right choice. For another example, if you live in a condominium, you probably won’t be able to add anything to your home’s exterior if you need more room. Carefully weigh your needs, and be realistic about possible solutions.
