Finding ways to make our homes more energy-efficient has become a greater necessity in the modern age. As concern for our environment has grown, we have luckily gained more advanced technology and options to live by more energy-efficient means. There are many ways to improve your home to help with this. For some of the top ways to make your home more energy-efficient, read below.
Better Regulate Your Thermostat
Regulating your thermostat is a great way to use energy more efficiently in your home. We all need to keep our homes warm during the colder months. But consider how often you run your heat. There are likely many times throughout the day when you don’t need it on. Lowering your thermostat when you’re out at work during the day, even by just a few degrees, will reduce your monthly electric bill and energy use.
Make a Compost Pile
Whether you have a large back yard or a small one, you can start a compost pile. This is a great resource-saver, since compost is made of organic waste. This waste can generally be comprised of food waste and scraps, which you can store in a pile or container as it gradually decomposes. Adding your organic waste to a compost pile will turn it into fertilizer, which is great for keeping your lawn and garden rejuvenated and healthy. This practice also reduces the amount of trash you produce, further benefitting the environment.
Seal or Replace Your Windows
One of the ways to make your home more energy-efficient that people don’t often think about is upgrading or replacing windows. One way to upgrade your windows is to seal them from any air leaks. Drafty windows often contribute to the lack of warmth in a home. Bead or silicone caulks work well to seal up any cracks and open areas in and around your windows. Using special materials such as fiberglass, vinyl, and wood is another one of the valuable steps for making windows energy-efficient. Different types of glass that retain more sunlight can also keep your rooms warmer.
Limit Your Running Water
Many people don’t realize the amount of water they waste in a day. Leaving the water running while doing the dishes, washing your hands, and brushing your teeth and not limiting the time on showers all contribute to excess water usage. Showers are still great in respect to taking baths, which use far more gallons of water. Another thing that may waste water is your washing machine. Doing full loads instead of multiple half-loads will cut the amount of water used in half, since the washer uses same amount of water each time it runs.
