Is this the year you finally put in that new deck or patio, turning your back yard into the outdoor living area you envisioned when you first bought your house? Great! As you design the space, here are a few enhancements to consider that can help you get the most out of your summer space.
Putting a grill on the new deck is a no-brainer. But if you fancy yourself a backyard gourmet, you might want to consider a built-in grill. A custom grill enclosure can allow you to create a larger prep and cooking space, and allows for more storage outdoors for grilling utensils and frequently used spices. A well-built enclosure will also protect your grill from harsh weather, and gives you the option of running a natural gas line directly to the grill, eliminating the hassle of propane cylinders forever.
If you plan on using your deck after dark, you should consider installing outdoor lighting. For smaller decks, spotlights mounted on the housework fine. For larger decks, or for a more intimate feel, low-level indirect lighting can preserve the nighttime atmosphere while still allowing you and your guests to see what you're doing.
Patio furniture is a must, but it's not likely to provide enough places to sit if you plan to do a lot of entertaining. Built-in seating can solve this problem. Bench seating installed instead of a rail along the edge of a deck or patio is a good way to make sure there are always plenty of places to sit. |
