When you’re left with an extra room in your home that you don’t know what to do with, you have endless possibilities for transforming it. Many parents find themselves with excess space after their children have grown up and moved out of the house permanently. Other families simply find themselves with extra rooms in general. No matter your reason for the extra space, check out these cool ways to transform a spare room.

Spare bedroom

This one may be fairly obvious, but a spare bedroom is never a bad thing. If you host guests often, having a private space for them would be nice so that they don’t have to curl up in the living room or blow up an air mattress.

Reading room

Setting up a reading room is rather low-maintenance and very useful. Simply add some bookshelves, collect enough books to fill those shelves, and invest in comfy seating. This can provide a quiet place for you to relax with a good book on stressful days.

Home theater

Designing a home theater can be very beneficial in several ways. It can increase your home’s resale value, and you’re guaranteed to utilize it. Make sure you don’t forget the essentials, such as an old-time popcorn maker or cozy theater seats. You can even put a mini bar in your home theater for an added level of fun and entertainment.

Home gym

If you or your family are into fitness but hate the commute to the local gym (or the atmosphere of it), consider turning that extra space into a home gym. Invest in your favorite workout equipment to create a space in which you can get fit in the comfort of your own home. You can also make space in your home gym for yoga by laying down some hardwood and placing a yoga mat over it near a wall mirror.

Greenhouse

Turn your spare room into a nature-filled space. Install special plant-growth lights, make sure there’s tons of window space, and fill your room to the brim with fun plants. This can improve your home’s air quality, and spending time around plants is even known to prevent depression.

Hobby room

Do you have a hobby you love or one that you’d love to pick up? Take advantage of your excess space and turn your spare room into a hobby room. Put up an easel and surround yourself with paints, create a pottery studio, install mirrors and a ballet bar, or create any type of custom space just for you to do something you enjoy.

Meditation room

Create a zen space for yourself or for your family to unwind after a stressful day. Whenever you’re feeling overwhelmed, you can simply slip away to your very own calming room. Put in plants, a comfortable place to sit or lie down, cool-toned decorations, and anything else that calms you down and makes you feel relaxed and connected to yourself.
