Concreting is the base of a strong building. Poor concrete workmanship leads to the collapsing of buildings.

Poor concreting is the result of negligence, inadequate experience, and lacking quality control. Such negligence can result in big mishaps and may even lead to loss of lives. So, it is extremely important that quality of the concrete work in maintained.

There are several common mistakes that concrete workers make unknowingly. The building supervisor as well as the building contractor need to oversee the concreting proceedings to ensure that these mistakes are not committed. Here is the list of all the commonly made concreting mistakes:

  • Improper or insufficient reinforcement: Reinforcement is essential for any concreting a driveway work. Improper reinforcement leads to a weak concrete slab. Failing to reinforce the concrete structure while pouring concrete can have several repercussions. As reinforcement is one of the intermediate steps, people tend to forget it easily while working. Concrete is strong in itself but lacks tensile strength. That is why reinforcement is needed. A concrete slab without reinforcements, is prone to cracking and crumbling, especially where there is a possibility of water remaining stagnant around it. Reinforcements hold the concrete together even when it starts to crack and thereby improve the strength of the concrete surface.
  • Forgetting to drain the base: To ensure to have a perfectly tensile and strong concrete path, never miss out on draining the base completely. If you do not, you end up damaging the newly poured concrete due to the weight of cars or any such additional pressure. When a lot of water remains stored in the base, the reinforcements get flimsy and then eventually give away. So, to make sure the pavers do not crack and collapse with pressure, you need to drain the base thoroughly. You need to place three to four inches of sand or gravel on the base to steady the base materials and enhance the drainage.
  • Starting trowelling too soon: The process of smoothening the concrete surface through trowelling is the most delicate process of all. This step requires precise timing and needs all the tools handy while doing it. If you start smoothing the surface too soon, you will risk bringing the cement paste on the surface and weakening it. One simple way to confirm that it is time to start trowelling during concreting a driveway is to see when the water on the surface starts to evaporate. You should be precise in choosing the right time for this as concrete surface harden fast and once it hardens, the process of smoothing is a lost cause.
  • Choosing the wrong mix for the project: Not all concreting projects need the same type of concrete mix. Each need different amounts cement and rest of the materials. Give the complete details of your project along with the purpose to the concreting a driveway contractor while you are ordering concrete. This way, you will get the most suitable mix for your project. Make sure you focus greatly on the amount of water you add. A slight shift in the cement and water ratio can lead to weakening of integrity of the cement. As important as water may be for increasing the malleability of cement, excess water does more damage than benefit. So, to get best results, keep water content minimal.

With regular practice or an expert’s supervision, the concreting process is as simple as it can get. In case you are not confident of your work, observe professionals at work and note down each and every step they take. Also, if you know about these commonly made mistakes beforehand, you can supervise the workers and ensure they do not make any such mistakes.
