Earlier, foam rendering had one and only function; to protect your home from external elements, mainly to stop rain from getting in. But today, rendering external walls has many other advantages too. It acts as an excellent insulator by keeping your home cooler in summer and warmer in winter and also helping to reduce energy bills.

Rendered foam walls provide moderate support for heavy brick walls, this is helpful especially in multi storey buildings. Moreover, home designers are assembling various materials, textures, and colors to create beautiful textures and visual experience.

There are three major types of foam used for external wall rendering: expanded polystyrene, extruded polystyrene, and polyisocyanurate. And, the, builders use polyiso in hot climates and expanded polystyrene in cold climates, because of their properties and features.

Most green builders avoid using extruded polystyrene because it is manufactured with the blowing agent which contributes to the global warming. Some builders and homeowners still prefer extruded polystyrene for foam rendering because of its structural strength and increased resistance. The foam can either be attached directly to the studs, or walls can be conventionally rendered with plywood before the foam is installed.

WHY FOAM RENDERING IS IMPORTANT?

There are several benefits of rendered foam walls, some of them are listed below:

  • Insulation:
Foam rendered walls offer excellent insulation. They seal all crannies and hooks from getting exposed. They provide air tight seals and stand up to weather, which prevents external elements from getting in. Moreover, they also have good sound insulation properties.
  • Energy Efficient:
The foam has an outstanding thermal quality, which allows you to make huge energy savings. It limits the heat loss and helps to keep your home cool during summer and warm during winter. All in all, foam rendered walls provide comfortable living spaces while saving money on your cooling and heating bills over time.
  • Moisture Block:
Even a tiny hole or crack in the wall allows entry of something more than air. If the holes are not sealed properly, they also allow moisture. Water cannot go through the foam rendered wall as it cannot penetrate through foam. So, in case of any flooding, there is no chance of water being absorbed by the foam rendered walls.
  • Prevents mold:
Foam rendering prevents walls from mold and mildew. It contains a kind of polymer that does not offer any food benefit to bacteria and fungus, thus preventing their growth.  It cannot encourage growth of corrosion or rust because of its water resistance property.
  • High durability:
Foam rendered walls have a passive polymer that encourages walls to have a high durability. So it is less likely to be damaged by the bangs and bumps of daily life. This is a real benefit to many homes and commercial buildings as it does not require any additional insulation for many years.
  • Aesthetics:
Foam rendering is also a stylish method for rendering your home’s external walls as it gives an attractive look. Rendered wall offers very smooth texture and decorative finish with colors being either embedded in the render itself or painted on later. This provides a great deal of flexibility with design and appearance.
  • High-Performance Home:
Last but not the least, foam rendered walls add value to your home as most of the buyers are interested in home’s thermal performance.

Even though foam rendering comes with a lot of advantages, it does require careful installation to avail the full advantage. It is better to hire an experienced and skilled professional for rendering foam installation to prevent the leakages and protect your home with proper insulation.
