Kids provide parents with constant joy and entertainment and parenting is a full-time job that often costs money, rather than earns it. Luckily there are some quick and easy fixes every penny savvy parent should know for those times when things inevitably gets sticky, sloppy, and colorful! The shelves of stores are lined with products to help undo damage done by kids, but sometimes you need something quick, effective, and inexpensive!

Crayon on the Wall or Floor

Kids often fancy themselves the next Picasso which can be wonderful, until your budding artist decides to decorate a wall or floor. Before you panic, try non-gel toothpaste. Squirt a little onto a rag or toothbrush, and scrub gently. The mild abrasive in the toothpaste will work to gently remove the crayon from your wall or floor. If you have wallpaper that has been decorated, try steel wool. Just proceed gently, as too vigorous scrubbing could strip the wall completely.

Foreign Object in the Toilet

If one of your kid’s toys decides to take a swim in the toilet, there are some things you can try before completely tearing apart your bathroom. First thing to try is reaching your hand down, and seeing if you can grab the toy and pull it out. A surprising number of toys get lodged pretty early before the pipe turns. If you cannot reach the toy, try a plunger. You want to suck the toy up, not push it down further, so push down lightly and pull up quickly when plunging. One final thing to try (before removing your toilet or calling a plumber) is a shop vac. Put the end of the hose just below the water line and turn it on. Hopefully the toy will be successfully sucked up.

Handling Heating

Having balls of energy running around can heat up your house quick, but by nightfall, everything is cold again. Remember to keep your thermostat constant. You can also invest in smart technologies that allow you to adjust it when the kids are asleep or out for the day. Sleep can also be improved in a slightly colder room, so don’t be afraid to bundle kids up in blankets and keep your heating steady. Professional services like New Jersey heating repair companies can schedule with you to adjust home temps. This way things can be perfectly adjusted to newborns and rambunctious kiddos.

Clogged Bathtub Drain

If your bathtub drain is slow, but there is no obvious obstruction, look no further than fourth grade science. If you wish to avoid harsh chemicals because of danger to kids, pets, and pipes, you can use baking soda and vinegar. Simply pour 1/4 cup of baking soda into the drain, followed by 1/2 cup of vinegar. Let it bubble away for a few minutes. When the bubbling stops or slows significantly, pour very hot water down the drain to stop the reaction. This quick and inexpensive trick may be all that’s needed to clear the drain. Another tool every parent should own and know how to use, is a basic manual plumbing snake. It can clear the more persistent clogs without the expense and hassle of a plumber.

Kids are fun little messes. Keep these quick fixes in mind to help keep your house relatively clean, your sanity somewhat intact, and your kids happy and care free.
