Summertime is the best time to improve your home. The summer means pool time, cookouts, hanging out with friends and warm nights with cold beverages and picnic tables full of food on the deck. However, many people come across one issue – there is no deck to use for these fun summer activities. There is no place to have friends over, cook burgers or hang towels after a cool dip in the pool on a hot day. Perhaps the home is a fixer-upper, perhaps the home could use a touch up in the backyard – whatever the reason, building a deck should be on everyone’s summer list. If you’re still not convinced, check out these four reasons for building or improving upon a deck.

A deck is a home investment. Remodeling Magazine mentioned in a 2014 Cost vs. Value Report that decks will return 87.4% of its own value to a home. Custom porches or decks are not only popular niches, they are also a cost effective way to add to your home investment. This will greatly increase the value of your property. If you ever for some reason find yourself moving or having to sell your home, you should be able to get more money back than the amount of money that you spend for it.

This one is a no brainer. Entertainment on the deck makes all guests more comfortable. There’s something different about hanging out above the ground, away from the grass, dirt and bugs that reign there. Grilling, hanging out, sharing a cool drink or just sitting around are all better on a deck, where guests feel more at home than they would on the back yard. You might even consider putting a stereo out on your deck. That way, when it comes time to throw a party, you can keep your guest entertained with good music and maybe even throw a dance party. With that said, you might also consider investing in putting a roof over the deck as well. That way if the nice weather turns into rainy weather, the party can still go on.

Home Size

Smaller homes benefit greatly from a deck addition. While your home is where you feel most comfortable, it may seem a bit crowded, especially if the inside is limited by room or square footage. A deck addition is cheaper than a room addition, and it gives the home a bigger feeling. Additionally, there is added relaxation space away from the rest of the house, in the fresh air. Screened in porches or decks are also an option to expand a home that might otherwise feel just a little too cramped.

An existing deck can be remodeled to a custom design, or a new deck can be built to your specifications. When building your deck, you will need to consider the wood products, hardware, and what color you want it to be before you build it. This will make the process of adding a deck a lot easier. You will also want to consider adding items such as benches, a grill, built in flower pots or places to hang wet pool clothing. Consider hot tubs, private changing areas and outdoor freshwater showers for summertime fun.

Consider what you want in a deck, then go for it. There are many reasons to improve or build a new deck this year.
