Your home is a reflection of you. You should be comfortable there, and you should have a feature or two in your home that tells guests a little about you. Here are four ways you can customize your home to make it your personal retreat.

1. Custom Shutters

Window treatments are some of the best ways to add a touch of creativity or personality to your home. Custom shutters are a great way to add curb appeal while at the same time personalizing your home. Most custom shutter companies provide a wide range of color options, so you can pick your favorite contrasting tones. While you’re focusing on the windows, you can also look at getting custom-sized blinds to spice up the interior of your windows.

2. Decoupage

Decoupage is a great way to personalize existing furniture. Consider using old postcards or other travel memorabilia to decoupage an end table or small shelving unit. If you feel particularly ambitious, select pictures or bits of tissue paper to use on a freshly painted dresser or vanity in a bedroom. If you are unfamiliar with the decoupage process, it’s best to start with small projects at first.

3. Built-In Storage

Regardless of the size of your home, you need storage space that suits your specific needs. Built-in storage areas are great ways to customize your space. You might do this by purchasing a bedroom set with storage built into the bed. Built-in shelving units along unused wall space makes a great way to store books or display knickknacks. You could even customize built-in shelving as a place to keep shoes and other wardrobe accessories.

4. Custom Tiling

Ceramic tiles are easy to install, and they provide a great way to enhance the look and feel of almost any room. You can do many different things with tiles. Pick a series of your favorite tiles from a bargain bin and create your own custom wall hanging for any room in the house. Give your bathroom a new look by installing a single row of tile three or four feet up on the wall. Create a unique backsplash in the kitchen with a selection of one-inch ceramic tiles.

Make your home your castle by customizing it to suit you. Choose one of these ideas, or use these tips as inspiration for your own home improvement or decorating ideas.
