So you’ve bought that beaten up old place and have wonderful ideas for transforming it into your dream cafe. So what are the steps for making this dream come true when you don’t know where to start?

There are so many decisions to make from the big things like the design and theme to other aspects like the style and design of the outdoor pavers you’ll have at the entrance. From A and Z and everything in between we’ve got a list of tips to help you make your cafe dream come true:

Decide on the look and feel you want
Forward planning is crucial. Decide on the theme you want, the design and layout before work commences. If required hire an interior designer or interior architect to help you with the layout to maximise space.

Utilise existing fixtures
You can cut huge costs to your renovation by using the existing fixtures already in place. If you are on a strict budget this is the way to go. It doesn’t mean to say you can change the design and look, but installing things here and there can become quite costly.

Create a timeline
You need to get things done as efficiently as possible so you can open and start making money when you plan to. If you double book tradesmen that aren’t able to work at the same time you can run into problems. This is when a timeline comes in handy.

Also when creating the timeline do things in consecutive order. Get flooring, and other repairs done before painting etc.

Choose your contractors wisely
You wouldn’t do it with renovations to your home, so don’t do it now. Shopping around for the right person for the job who you can trust to get it done right and in a timely manner is so important, don’t go with the first quote you receive.

Invest in the future
It can be hard starting up your own business. You’ve got no money coming in, but there seems to be lots going out. You really need to make the right changes to your cafe now, so it can last and age well, not needing work done to it in the next few years. Invest in slate or other forms of high quality flooring that will stand tough against spills and heavy feet and still look stylish after a good mop.

Buy furniture that looks great and feels comfortable and most of all is safe. It will cost you more in the long run if you have to keep buying more chairs. Get it right the first time and you won’t have to waste your time and money.

All the creature comforts
Make sure the extras are added to make patrons feel comfortable. Install a high quality reverse cycle air conditioner, buy some high chairs for little ones and make sure you play music that’s relaxing and inviting to customers.

Renovating your very own cafe is very exciting. I hope our tips have given you some useful ideas for making the process all the more easier, enjoyable and efficient.
